A ‘Karanga’ is a ceremonial call in the Maori language. Performed by women, it pays tribute to the spirits of the ancestors, asking that they be present and bear witness.
This series in watercolour, pastel, ink and embossing, is my tribute to the departed and influenced by a 6 year stay in New Zealand. Referencing the rich Maori culture, each of the pieces includes a finely patterned strip of watercolour representing a ‘talking stick’, elaborately carved in Maori tradition and carrying the story of the people and the energy of anyone who has touched it.
