After my husband’s death, I was left with countless scraps of paper, the preliminary ideas and references that filled the corners of his studio. In my grief, I built a bonfire and began to burn pages ritually, one at a time. Rainbows flared from inks and paint, pages curled and burst into flame until only charred and smoke-stained scraps survived. Remnants of loss, burnt, reduced, left behind – all that remained. The fire collages of the element series began.
Slowly the work evolved, moving through layers of revelation and restoration. Darkness to light, death, rebirth, seasonal change and acceptance – layer upon layer. As a broken earth is open to receive the nurturing rain, somehow from a darkness beyond hope, we find renewal.
